The Silver Dollar has its roots
in Europe - The Dollar evolved from the German Taler silver
coin, designed as a substitute for gold florins in 1484. They
were so popular that most of Europe struck similar silver
pieces. The Spanish dollar or 'piece of eight' was widely
used in the American colonies and it was natural that the
Dollar was officially adopted by the American Congress in
1785. The first American Dollar were 416 grains weight and
892.4 fine. The 1804 Dollar illustrated was struck at the
mint between 1834 and 1835. They were known as the 'original'
and it was common practice to use old dies.
Framed set includes a genuine
'Morgan' Silver Dollar, circa 1920's and a genuine present
day dollar bill, the reverse of which retains the eagle holding
an olive branch with 13 stars used on the majority of past
Dollars.
